What Two Days With 200 Builders Taught Us About Marketing
Sometimes the best way to understand your clients isn't from behind a desk.
It's by spending time with them.
That's exactly why four members of the Pop That team packed our bags and headed to Queenstown for the 2026 Professional Builder Summit.
Yes, Queenstown is a pretty great place for a work trip.
But we were there with a purpose.
To listen.
To better understand the challenges builders are facing.
To hear what keeps them awake at night.
And to become better at helping them build stronger businesses.

The pattern we'd already started to notice
Over the past year, we've had the opportunity to work alongside The Professional Builder (TPB) and a growing number of residential builders throughout New Zealand.
Builders like Pro Limit Builders, Millar Construction, Lindsay Building Services, Cambridge Building and Pōneke Construction.
As we worked more closely with the industry, we kept noticing the same pattern.
It wasn't that builders weren't investing in marketing.
Most already had a website.
Many were active on social media.
Some were running Google Ads or Meta campaigns.
Almost all relied heavily on referrals and word of mouth.
The problem wasn't a lack of marketing.
It was that none of it was working together.
Marketing had become a series of disconnected activities rather than one connected system.
A website over here.
Social media over there.
Advertising when work slowed down.
Sales collateral sitting somewhere else.
Follow-up happening differently every time.
There was plenty of effort.
But often no clear pathway from first enquiry to signed contract.
That observation became one of the biggest themes of our conversations at the Summit.
Two days of listening
The Professional Builder Summit brought together builders from across New Zealand to share ideas, challenges and practical ways to build better businesses.
While we had the opportunity to present and host a marketing table discussion, some of the most valuable moments happened between sessions.
Over coffee.
At dinner.
During the networking events.
We kept hearing variations of the same questions.
"How do we generate more consistent enquiries?"
"We're busy now... but what happens in twelve months?"
"How do we attract better clients instead of just more enquiries?"
"How do we stand out when three builders are quoting the same project?"
What became obvious was this.
Most builders don't have a building problem.
They're exceptional at delivering great projects.
The challenge is everything that happens before someone signs the contract.

The biggest lesson we took away
The Summit reinforced something we'd already begun to believe.
Better marketing isn't about doing more marketing.
It's about building a better system.
A system that helps the right people discover your business.
Build trust before they've even met you.
Guide them through a consistent sales process.
And continue creating value long after the project is complete through referrals and repeat work.
When those pieces connect, marketing starts supporting the business instead of becoming another thing to manage.
Introducing the Builder Growth Roadmap
Those conversations helped shape what has now become our Builder Growth Roadmap.
Rather than jumping straight into websites, advertising or social media, we start by understanding the business itself.
Where are you trying to go?
What's already working?
Where are the bottlenecks?
What will actually move the needle over the next 12 months?
Sometimes the answer is improving positioning.
Sometimes it's strengthening sales assets.
Sometimes it's better photography.
Sometimes it's lead generation.
Sometimes it's simply creating a more consistent follow-up process.
The point is that every builder's priorities are different.
The next step shouldn't be determined by whichever marketing service someone happens to sell.
It should be determined by what the business actually needs.
We're only just getting started
One of the biggest highlights of the Summit wasn't standing on stage.
It was the conversations afterwards.
Builders sharing ideas.
Asking honest questions.
Comparing experiences.
And challenging each other to build better businesses.
That's exactly the sort of environment we love being part of.
The Summit confirmed something we've been saying for a while now.
Marketing isn't a website.
It isn't Google Ads.
It isn't social media.
Marketing is a growth system.
And the builders who consistently win better projects aren't necessarily the ones spending the most on marketing.
They're the ones building better systems.
We're excited to continue working alongside TPB and its members as we help more builders create businesses with stronger brands, better sales processes and more predictable pipelines.
After two days in Queenstown, one thing is certain.
We're only just getting started.
